In one of his earliest sketches, Sherlock Bill, Wilton played an incompetent policeman. He performed it for over twenty-five years to great acclaim including in the USA (right).

Robb suffered several sad episodes in his life but the biggest tragedy occured in 1943 at the height of his fame.
His only son, Bob, a moderately succesful actor, was killed in a bizarre accident in London.

In 1923 Robb created one of his most enduring buffoons, the magistrate, Mr Muddlecombe JP, a character who became immensly popular on stage, radio and in films until the 1950s.
