Music halls and theatres in a lancashire town

People's Palace 5

Music Hall originated as unlicensed entertainment organised at public houses and evolved into variety shows presented at purpose built venues such as the St Helens People’s Palace of Varieties. Several artistes performed here including Vesta Tilley, George Formby Sr, and Charles Coborn (The Man Who Broke the Bank at Monte Carlo). The People’s Palace also staged the town’s first film show in 1897 (above).
